That is what England s outgoing Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, thinks, too. In her October 2019 special report on childhood obesity, her final advice to government on health issues, she doubted that the 2030 target could be reached without some really serious measures being introduced. So, in Time To Solve Childhood Obesity, she lists the bold measures she thinks need to be taken the same draconian and game changing measures that Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt promised but never delivered before they lost their jobs. The pity is that Davies will no longer be in the post to oversee her solutions take shape. There is not the space in this column to go through all 49 of them, but one should be looked at in detail. There s some history to go through and it s shaming. In advocating the routine measurement of children s weight and height, Dame Sally has attempted to right the wrongs wrought on a generation of children. The wrongs began in 2002 when Whitehall failed to implement a similar proposal made by her predecessor, Sir Liam Donaldson. At a stroke, the government condemned millions of schoolchildren to grow into obesity without the professional checks on their health to which they should be entitled. It is sadly ironic that animals are measured yearly during health checks in zoos and annual MOTs ensure that our cars are in good working order, but with children the nation s future no such checks have been deemed relevant until now.
The percentage of South Lanarkshire school children who are at risk of being obese in primary one has risen.New government figures have revealed a slight year on year increase, following a survey of almost 2900 youngsters.
J. J. Rawlinson, a veterinarian at Wallis Annenberg PetSpace, a pet community center in California, schooled me about the idea of cat depression. Depression, as we think about in people, does not really occur in cats , she says. Cats that are acting depressed often have a medical condition. They may be, for example, nauseous or experiencing arthritis. In other words, many veterinarians don t believe that cats suffer from emotional tumult the same way humans do. Pet parents diagnosing their feline friends with depression is believed to more likely be us projecting human feeling states onto our fur babies than it is to be actual depression. The good news, here, is that sad cats are probably not sad. The bad news is that cats who seem sad may actually be physically sick. That means that it s extra important to stay tuned in to signs that you might be tempted to attribute to depression because cat moods are subtle health barometers.

Washington D.C. (USA), Dec 29 (ANI): A study of nine trials of 7,50,000 people showed a reduced risk of seven types of cancers with the amount of physical activity during leisure time. Many types of cancer have a relationship of 'dose response' from the seven cancers identified in the report. The study was conducted by researchers of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and National Cancer Institute from the American Cancer Society and is published in the Journal Clinical Oncology."Physical activity guidelines have largely been based on their impact on chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes," said Alpa Patel, senior scientific director of epidemiology research of the American Cancer Society. The guidelines for activity stated that 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate intensity workout in a week or 1.25 to 2.5 hours of vigorous activity is the ideal amount of physical activity for sustaining a healthy lifestyle.Researchers after the study found engaging in recommended amounts of activity (7.5 to 15 MET hours week) was associated with a statistically significant lower risk of seven of the 15 cancer types studied, with the reduction increasing with more MET hours.Physical activity was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer in men (8 per cent for 7.5 MET hours week; 14 per cent for 15 MET hours week), female breast cancer (6 10 per cent), endometrial cancer (10 18 per cent), kidney cancer (11 17 per cent), myeloma (14 19 per cent), liver cancer (18 27 per cent), and non Hodgkin lymphoma (11 18 per cent in women)."These data provide strong support that these recommended levels are important to cancer prevention, as well," said Patel. The researchers' results have directly supported the activity levels suggested for cancer prevention. As of now the cause or pathology behind these conditions is not well understood. Some researchers believe that environment as well genetics could play a role in causation of this condition. Some children may develop mutations that are not inherited and not seen in the parents but occur de novo in the child. This new study reveals that there may be certain mutations detectable in the sperms of the fathers that may raise the risk of autism in the child.Researchers from University of California San Diego School of Medicine as well as from other institutes worked together to work on measurement of mutations in the sperms of the fathers. They described a method to measure the mutations causing disease only in the sperms of the fathers that could raise risk of ASD in the offspring.
Findings from the new study were posted recently in Nature Medicine through an article titled Autism risk in offspring can be assessed through quantification of male sperm mosaicism. "Autism afflicts 1 in 59 children and we know that a significant portion is caused by these de novo DNA mutations, yet we are still blind to when and where these mutations will occur, " explained co senior study investigator Jonathan Sebat, PhD, professor and chief of the Beyster Center for Molecular Genomics of Neuropsychiatric Diseases at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "With our new study, we can trace some of these mutations back to the father, and we can directly assess the risk of these same mutations occurring again in future children. "
