Remember that cute little girl from Uncle Buck that was kind of a rascal but was a cute and engaging rascal? Gaby Hoffmann is in her 30s now and no longer has that childish exuberance that a lot of people remember but at the very least she;s still an interesting individual that can be remembered if you take a look at her picture side by side. It;s intriguing to learn that she spent a good number of years living in a very posh hotel but it;s just as interesting to hear that she didn;t care to work with Macaulay Culkin when they were cast in Uncle Buck. Normally one tends to hear about conflicts arising from differences between adolescents and adults, but apparently child actors have their favorites and least favorites as well, which seems pretty natural really since at a certain age kids do start to develop the biases that will eventually follow them into adulthood or be left behind as they continue to mature. What;s funny about Gaby however is that she eventually got tired of acting, as Field of Dreams was her first appearance and Uncle Buck came after. It;s easy to think that the schedule that an actor has to follow at any age would get tiring however, and after a while she decided that she wanted out. When Macaulay Culkin saw his career continue to rise however Gaby ''s competitive nature got the better of her and she dove back in, deciding that she too could make something more of what she 'd been doing. This Is My Life and Sleepless in Seattle were two of her biggest movies after that point but she did go on to star in other movies as she continued to grow up, as well as TV shows that gained her the kind of notice that she wanted. You could say that she ''s been successful since she ''s done very well for herself but if one stated that they know exactly who she is and why she ''s successful it would mean that they 've been following her career for a while. Otherwise just speaking her name might confuse a lot of folks that would remember her from big name movies like Uncle Buck and Field of Dreams since she did stick out in a big and very positive manner. Apart from her acting career though Gaby has lived what sounds to be an accomplished life since she ''s educated, she ''s been around, and she hasn ''t faded off into the distance no matter that a lot of people might not know her by name but will know her by sight.

One of the most memorable moments in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is Rick Dalton #39;s (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) frantic meltdown in his trailer after he forgets his lines while shooting a pilot for western series Lancer. As it turns out, that scene was not in the original script, and was added by Quentin Tarantino at DiCaprio #39;s behest. The star told the writer director, "I need to fuck up during the Lancer sequence, and when I fuck up during the Lancer sequence, I need to have a real crisis of conscious about it and I have to come back from it in some way, " Tarantino remembered at a post screening Q amp;A in Los Angeles on Sunday. "My response was, #39;You #39;re going to fuck up my Lancer sequence? That #39;s my western I get two for one in this movie, I snuck a western in here while no one was fucking looking #39; "

Key point: The world has many hotspots that could result into global warfare. The world has avoided war between major power war since 1945, even if the United States and the Soviet Union came quite close on several occasions during the Cold War. In the first two decades following the fall of the Berlin Wall, great power war seemed virtually unimaginable. Today, with China s power still increasing and Russia s rejection of the international order apparently complete, great power conflict is back on the menu. In what is slowly becoming a tradition here at TNI (see my predictions for 2017 and 2018) what are the most dangerous flashpoints to watch in 2019? The South China Sea: The South China Sea (SCS) has become wrapped into the growing trade clash between the United States and China. For now, that conflict is playing out in exchanges of heated rhetoric, tariffs and various other trade sanctions. The United States and Canada recently escalated the conflict by arresting an executive of the Chinese technology firm Huawei, which led to counter steps by China against Canadian citizens and U.S. firms. As of yet the United States and China have not drawn a tight connection between the trade war and the ongoing disputes in the SCS. However, as relations between the two countries deteriorate, one or the other might decide to escalate beyond dollars, words and legal filings. Indeed, if China and the United States conclude that their trade relationship (which has provided the foundation of global economic growth for the last two decades) is at substantial risk, and similarly conclude that further conflict is inevitable, then either might decide to take off the gloves in the SCS. Ukraine: The world remembered Ukraine when an incident at the passage into the Sea of Azov resulted in shots fired, a ramming and the detention of two Ukrainian patrol vessels. Whether instigated by Russia or Ukraine (and both governments appear to have played some part), the interception reignited tensions in a crisis that has smoldered for the last couple of years. The declaration of martial law by the Ukrainian government suggested the possibility of unrest in Ukraine. To be sure, Russia seems to lack any interest in disrupting the status quo ahead of the Ukrainian elections, while the Ukrainian government continues to lack the capacity to consequentially change facts on the ground. The upcoming elections will probably not change the basic equation, but could introduce uncertainty. Given the continuing tensions between Russia and the United States, even a small shift could threaten the uneasy balance that has held for the last several years, potentially throwing Eastern Europe into chaos. Persian Gulf: The perpetual political and military crisis in the Middle East has settled into an uneasy tedium. Economic pressure on Iran continues to increase, as the United States take ever more aggressive steps to curtail trade. The Saudi war on Yemen shows no signs of abating, and while the Syrian Civil War has dialed down to a low, slow burn, both the United States and Russia remain committed to their partners and proxies. But like any slow burn, the conflict could reignite. Political turmoil in Iran could destabilize the region, either pushing Iran into aggressive behavior or making the Islamic Republic a tempting target for its enemies. The tensions between Kurds, Turks, Syrians and Iraqis could break into open conflict at any time. Finally, the mercurial leader of Saudi Arabia has demonstrated time and again a proclivity for risk acceptance, even as whispers about the stability of the Kingdom grow louder. Given the strategic importance of the region, any instability could lead to conflict between the United States, Russia or even China. Korean Peninsula: It is undoubtedly correct that tensions on the Korean Peninsula have declined a great deal in the last year, as Kim Jong un has demonstrated a degree of forbearance regarding nuclear and ballistic missile tests, and President Donald Trump has toned down his rhetoric about confronting North Korea. And indeed, the prospects of an enduring peace are surely brighter now than at any time since the mid 1990s. And yet serious pitfalls remain. The president has staked his prestige on an agreement with North Korea, yet by most serious accounts North Korea has not suspended, or even slowed, its production of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. President Trump s advisors are aware of and unhappy about this fundamental contradiction. If Trump sours on Kim, if elements of the administration try to spoil any agreement, or if Kim sours on Trump, the relationship between Washington and Pyongyang could go sour very quickly. Moreover, neither China nor Japan are fully on board with reconciliation between South Korea and a fully nuclear North Korea, although their reasons for skepticism are quite different. All told, the situation in Korea remains much more dangerous than the most optimistic assessments would suggest. Unpredictable? As a colonel at the U.S. Army War College memorably phrased the problem, the United States has wrongly predicted every conflict since the Korean War. Why should we expect World War III will be any different? Great powers tend to devote diplomatic, military, and political resources to what they regard as the most serious conflicts on their plates. Less critical conflicts don t receive as much attention, meaning that they can sometimes grow into serious confrontations before anyone quite notices what s going on. Disruptive conflict could emerge in the Baltics, in Azerbaijan, in Kashmir or even in Venezuela, but the United States, China and Russia only have so much focus. If World War III comes about, it may well come from a completely unexpected direction. Final Thoughts: Is the world more dangerous today than it was a year ago? Perhaps not, although the decay of the relationship between China and the United States portends ill for the future. The flashpoints may change over time, but the fundamental foundations of conflict the decay of U.S. military hegemony and of the global international order that has accompanied it mean that the near future will likely become more hazardous than the recent past. Earlier this week, researchers from Warwick University claimed people of Britain were at their most unhappy in 1978.The latter year and the first two months of 1979 are best remembered for the Winter of Discontent, where strikes took place and caused various disruptions.
At this point in time, it s unclear if Banksy will be best remembered for his art, or for his remarkable ability to stir up publicity surrounding virtually everything he does. With his devotion to elaborate jokes and rambunctious capitalist critique, Banksy turns the nebulous climate around his works into an Event, nearly every single time, with admirable regularity. The most recent incident affiliated with the Banksy brand of chaos has to do with his painting of British Parliament, in which all the presumably formerly human beings in the frame have been turned into chimpanzees. When the painting was introduced to the public in 2009, it was called Question Time. Now, in 2019, Sotheby s has announced that the painting will be up for auction in early October, but observers have noted that there are certain subtle differences between Question Time and Devoted Parliament, the new name of the work that s now being put up for sale. These small but noticeable differences between the former painting and the current painting in question include the elimination of two, previously prominent lights, the shape of a banana that one of the chimps is holding and other small details. Banksy is an incredibly in demand artist, and Sotheby s has a lot to gain from the potential sale of Devoted Parliament, which has been predicted to sell for between $1.9 million and $2.5 million. And so, perhaps predictably, the message from the auction house is that this isn t a Banksy manufactured controversy, this is an overblown skirmish not even worth investigating further.

Key point: Brazil and other countries contributed forces, logistics, bases, or aid to help the Allies win World War II. The term United Nations was in large part derived from the large number of nations that joined in common cause between 1939 and 1945 to defeat the Axis powers of Germany, Japan, and Italy during World War II. Scores of nations joined the major Allied powers to contribute, directly or indirectly, to the defeat of the common enemy. One of those nations was South America s largest country, Brazil. The significant contribution of her wealth, resources, and blood of her own people is, unfortunately, little remembered today. Latin America in World War II Originally, Latin America was important to the United States for the resources it provided to a nation soon to be at war. In 1940, 90 percent of the region s coffee, 83 percent of the sugar, 78 percent of the bauxite, 70 percent of the tungsten, as well as significant percentages of tin, copper, and crude oil were imported to the United States for both domestic and military consumption. Although the United States was not yet at war, it had concerns about Latin America, for a dictator sympathetic to Adolf Hitler or Benito Mussolini might cause trouble for a United States that was trying to remain neutral. German propaganda took full advantage of the opportunity and distributed literature and films in Spanish to encourage dissension throughout Latin America. It even established a propaganda radio station in Montevideo, Uruguay. Mexico was already at odds with the United States. It had expropriated American oil companies, and the United States was claiming that communist and National Socialist plots were prevalent throughout that country. And the Mexican government was ready to expel any American agents within its borders that were identified. Mexico also clearly anticipated a German victory, which the country was expected to use to strengthen its position with the United States. Mexico finally sent a squadron of fighter aircraft to the Pacific late in the war. Other Central and South American countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, and Venezuela wanted no part of the conflict and remained on the sidelines. Brazil s Road to War In Brazil in June 1940, President Get lio Vargas had already informed the German ambassador that Brazil fully intended to maintain its independence, despite Vargas s known dislike of the democratic system and the appeal he personally felt for totalitarian states. Other states, like Argentina, were split in their loyalties. Chile, Uruguay, and Panama (of the Spanish speaking countries, only Panama entered into a declaration of war) were sympathetic to the American camp, but the United States had to bring the entire continent onto its side. To do so, President Franklin Roosevelt established the Inter American Financial and Economic Committee, based in Panama. Then a number of conferences were held in Panama, Rio de Janeiro, and Washington, D.C., to settle differences between the members. The Chapultepec Conference held in Mexico resulted in an agreement that laid the foundations of the future cooperation of the American states. With Nelson A. Rockefeller as his coordinator for inter American affairs, President Roosevelt loaned the Latin American states money, increased imports from them to the United States, and sent American technicians to modernize the economy of the various countries. The Germans did much to push Brazil into the American camp. U boat attacks off the coast of Brazil sank several Brazilian ships and killed over 600 of its citizens, including women and children. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Vargas decided to honor his nation s commitments to the United States and, in January 1942, broke diplomatic relations with Germany, Japan, and Italy. The Brazilian Navy immediately took steps to protect its shipping while the air force conducted offshore patrols to detect enemy submarines. Several Brazilian military bases were ceded to the United States for similar uses. The sinking of Brazilian ships continued, however, with another dozen ships gone by August 1942. Vargas and his government had enough provocation by this point, and in the same month declared war on Germany and Italy. The Creation of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force It took longer for Brazil to decide how to contribute to the Allied war effort. Concerns that the fascist forces in North Africa, which bulged too close for comfort just across the South Atlantic, might take some aggressive action against Brazil, kept her forces at home in a protective mode. But with the Allied invasion of North Africa in November 1942 and the eventual defeat of the Axis forces there, Brazil turned to a more active role in the war. On December 31, 1942, President Vargas announced in a speech that his government was beginning to think on the responsibilities of an extra continental action. This idea would soon develop into the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, which would fight alongside the Allies in Italy in 1944 and 1945. The first concrete steps were taken at a conference between Presidents Roosevelt and Vargas at Natal in northeastern Brazil on January 28, 1943. There the two heads of state agreed that Brazil would make some physical contribution to the Allied war effort beyond protecting its own borders. That March, President Vargas issued an Explanation of Motives written earlier by the war minister in which he proposed the organization of an expeditionary force to fight outside the continent. Thus was born the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, or BEF. Although the idea had taken hold, there remained problems within Brazil itself. There were strong elements within the Vargas government who opposed Brazil s participation in the war against the Axis powers. Then there was the problem of organizing, training, equipping, and staffing such a force. There was also a need to infuse into the Brazilian people a will to fight a war in the Old World, which was far away and often resented by factions of the populace. But Vargas and his followers began campaigns to overcome each of these obstacles in turn, and by the fall of 1943 he accomplished his goal. The BEF would consist largely of a single infantry division based on the contemporary American model. To create such a unit, existing Brazilian military units would be consolidated into the necessary combat formations. Thus, the three infantry regiments were formed from units spread across Brazil. The 1st Infantry Regiment, or Sampaio Regiment, came from the military district of Rio de Janeiro. The 6th Infantry Regiment, formerly the Ipiranga Regiment, came from S o Paulo State. The 11th Infantry Regiment was formerly known as the Tiradentes Regiment and came from Minas Gerais State. Most of the artillery was formed from units then based in and around Rio de Janeiro and S o Paulo. The unit s 9th Engineer Battalion came from Aquidauana, Mato Grosso State, while the Reconnaissance Squadron was formed out of the 2nd Mechanized Regiment, based within the city of Rio de Janeiro. The medical battalion consisted of units based in both Rio de Janeiro and S o Paulo. On October 7, 1943, Maj. Gen. Jo o Baptista Mascarenhas de Moraes was appointed to command the assembled units. The general was born in S o Gabriel, Rio Grande de Sul State, in 1883, and at age 16 entered the Rio Pardo Military School as a cadet. He then completed his military training at the Brazilian Military School in Rio de Janeiro and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Later in his career he won first place in the Officers Higher Training School and third place at the General Staff School; both courses were directed by the French military mission. He continued to rise in rank and responsibilities until he reached the highest post of chief of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. Adopting the American Military Model For many years prior to the outbreak of World War II, the Brazilian military had been instructed by a French military mission. All of its military equipment was European. This ceased with the surrender of France in 1940. Now the Brazilian forces were to participate in a foreign war with different allies, and new tactics and techniques, not to mention organizational skills, had to be learned. To this end, General Mascarenhas traveled to the United States to quickly learn American military techniques, organization, and equipment. In Brazil the complete transformation of the BEF from a European model organization to an American based one took time and a great deal of effort. For example, the BEF had to be motorized, more specialists trained, and new equipment introduced. The M1 Garand rifle, the 60mm mortar, bazooka, .30 caliber light machine gun, 57mm antitank gun, and the 105mm artillery pieces, among others, were unknown to the Brazilians. These all had to be acquired, learned, and then implemented within the unit s structure, which itself was changing. Recruitment of personnel, particularly for the specialist positions, was difficult and time consuming. Additionally, many of its leading officers were still undergoing training in the United States. In December, General Mascarenhas traveled to Italy with a group of observers viewing the Italian campaign. On December 28, 1943, Mascarenhas was officially named commander of the 1st Expeditionary Infantry Division (1st EID), and in January, upon his return from Italy, he assumed command of the still forming BEF. 1 2 3 4 5 Next View the discussion thread. copy; Copyright 2019 Center for the National Interest All Rights Reserved
Anyone familiar with Apple;s history of aggressive self promotion knew that titling yesterday;s event ;By Innovation Only; was either a declaration that something really big was about to be unveiled or the ultimate act of hubris for a company that has already had a rough year. Choosing the word ;innovation; implied bigger steps forward than what was previously obvious, and as the event began Apple CEO Tim Cook doubled down on the theme, promising viewers a ;huge morning; with ;some truly big announcements.;What followed was anything but huge. Apple began with underwhelming demos of new subscription services that appeared to justify their atypically low prices, followed by an uninspired update to the basic iPad, the smallest Apple Watch hardware upgrade thus far, and new iPhones that were "S " caliber in everything but name. Particularly ugly cameras and modestly longer battery life will be remembered as the biggest iPhone advancements of the event. Despite the theme and Cook 's excitement, big innovations were actually so few and far between that many viewers left the broadcast asking, "Is that it? "
