TwitterEmailFacebookTwitterEmailDespite being the source of all life on Earth and the definitional center of the solar system, the sun is still something of an enigma. How fast does the solar wind blow? How do those particles streaming from the sun s surface actually achieve liftoff? What s going on in the corona, the sun s atmosphere? Well, NASA s Parker Solar Probe is on its way to shed some light on those mysteries. This week the mission s researchers released new results in the journal Nature a tantalizing, preliminary look at our star. Some of the answers are there, along with a close up look at subatomic particle events invisible from Earth. And more answers are coming in 2024, when the Parker Solar Probe enters its official science orbit. So in the plucky probe s honor, here s a journey through some of the existing stellar science. Grab your sunglasses.Medium sized solar flares like this burst of radiation captured by NASA s Solar Dynamic Observatory in 2013 generally don t affect things back on Earth, but they can interfere with GPS satellites and other objects in orbit. It s a small price to pay for beauty; these solar burps are also partially responsible for the atmospheric ionization that causes aurora events at Earth s poles.
The data from the probe, published in the journal Nature, offers clues to long standing mysteries, including why the Sun''s atmosphere, known as the corona, is hundreds of times hotter than its surface, as well as the precise origins of the solar wind.Since its launch in August 2018, Parker Solar Probe has completed three of the 24 planned passes through never before explored parts of the Sun''s atmosphere, using cutting edge scientific instruments to measure the environment around the spacecraft.
In 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover went to Mars to explore Gale Crater. Gale Crater is the ancient remnant of a massive impact. Sediment carried by water and wind filled in the crater floor, layer by layer. After the sediment hardened, wind carved the layered rock into the towering Mount Sharp, which Curiosity is climbing today.

As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edwards image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks. With the help of her childhood friend JACOB BLACK (Taylor Lautner), Bella refurbishes an old motorbike to carry her on her adventures. Bellas frozen heart is gradually thawed by her budding relationship with Jacob, a member of the mysterious Quileute tribe, who has a supernatural secret of his own. When a chance encounter brings Bella face to face with a former nemesis, only the intervention of a pack of supernaturally large wolves saves her from a grisly fate, and the encounter makes it frighteningly clear that Bella is still in grave danger. In a race against the clock, Bella learns the secret of the Quileutes and Edwards true motivation for leaving her. She also faces the prospect of a potentially deadly reunion with her beloved that is a far cry from the one shed hoped for. With more of the passion, action and suspense that made TWILIGHT a worldwide phenomenon, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON is a spellbinding follow-up to the box office hit.

Hammarskj ld s death is one of many unsolved mysteries in Cold Case Hammarskj ld, a twisty, thorny new documentary that grips, jolts and exasperates in roughly equal measure. It s the latest work from Mads Br gger, a Danish filmmaker with Michael Moore s knack for confrontation and some of his countryman Lars von Trier s impishness. Starting with The Red Chapel, his 2010 peek behind the walls of present day North Korea, he has carved out a lively if murky nonfiction niche for himself: He delights in storming into conflict zones and playing both the dogged muckraker and the self aggrandizing showman. This is not the first time Br gger has taken up a camera or stepped in front of it to expose political and financial corruption on the African continent, as he did in 2011 s The Ambassador. Nor is it the first time he has so brazenly (and, it must be said, entertainingly) blurred the lines between investigation and provocation, personal memoir and geopolitical thriller. In Cold Case Hammarskj ld, he seems to take particular relish in both exploiting and undermining the conventions of the detective procedural. As he tracks down witnesses and pores over old documents and photographs, he narrates and theorizes up a storm, annotating and interrogating his own unruly process at every turn.

TwitterEmailCourtesy of HBO.FacebookTwitterEmailLast month, when HBO first announced that some of the cast and crew of Game of Thrones would attend San Diego Comic Con after a divisive final season, the network promised a stacked roster of talent, including creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss along with Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Nikolaj Coster Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont), Conleth Hill (Varys), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), and executive producer and frequent director Miguel Sapochnik. But after an ugly online movement to heckle the panel started gaining steam, Weiss, Benioff, Emmanuel, Glen, and Sapochnik all dropped out most citing scheduling conflicts. The remaining cast members who braved the crowd in San Diego s Hall H on Friday were a somewhat defensive bunch. (Who can blame them?) The panel kicked off with an unprecedented call for civility from Comic Con director of programming Eddie Ibrahim. Mostly answering softball what if questions from their moderator, the cast did manage to clear up one or two lingering mysteries from the controversial season eight.

A team of astrophysicists, including one of Indian origin, has found that the Moon, where NASA will be sending astronauts by 2024, contains clues to the ancient mysteries of the Sun, which are crucial to understanding the development of life. Our natural satellite took shape when a Mars sized object smashed into Earth about 4.5 billion years ago.
In hopes of answering one of the "fundamental mysteries of the cosmos" whether life exists beyond the Earth NASA is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to the red planet. Mars lies at a distance of 56 million kilometres from Earth. With current technology, a return journey would take three years. But the long timespan is the least of the problems that the team of scientists, engineers and doctors working on the mission to Mars face. A documentary by BBC Horizon explores some of the greatest challenges that lie on the journey to Mars. Different from the moon landing
