Through speeches, hymns and prayer, the thousands who gathered at the Soldiers amp; Sailors Memorial Hall sat to remember those who died in the tragedy. Eleven people were killed and six others were injured when a suspected gunman, identified as Robert Bowers of Baldwin, Penn., opened fire in the Tree of Life synagogue Saturday morning. Bowers has been taken into custody and charged with 29 counts related to federal hate crime laws, including 11 counts of obstruction of religious beliefs resulting in death. Outside the memorial hall, hundreds of attendees who couldn 't fit into the auditorium gathered in the rain to listen to the event on speakers while inside, community leaders vowed to remain strong in wake of the massacre. Rabbis from the three affected Tree of Life congregations spoke during the event mdash; Rabbi Jonathan Perlman, Rabbi Jeffrey Myers and Rabbi Cheryl Klein.
On Monday 11th November 1918, the treaty known as the Armistice of Compi gne came into effect, ending hostilities between the Allies and Germany. A yagya or hawan is a Hindu ritual done in front of a sacred fire, wherein mantras or hymns are chanted and various offerings like ghee, milk, jaggery and flowers are made. A majayagya is a hawan done on an elaborate scale for a longer duration. These rituals are held in order to appease the gods.The mahayagya in Meerut, which began Sunday, has been organized by the members of Shri Ayutchandi Mahayagya Samiti to reduce pollution. The front lawns of the regal Diggi Palace resonated with hymns as Shillong Chamber Choir took centre stage at the inaugural session of the 10th edition of Zee Jaipur Literature Festival. With winter sun spreading warmth and Shillong Choir singing some mesmerising songs including a few Bollywood classics, the crowd had no option but cheer loudly as mentor, director of the choir, Neil Nongkynrih said, We are here representing the North East. We are here to spread love and peace and they did more than that with their music.
On Tuesday evening, Christmas Eve mass was held at several Oriental Orthodox churches throughout the city. The pews of the Surp Vartanants Armenian Church were filled during the service, which was conducted in Armenian. Those present sang hymns such as Der Voghormia (Lord of Mercy). The congregation then filed out of the church holding candles and sang and prayed together in the front yard of the church. The candles are held to symbolize the light that Jesus brought the world with his birth. Afterwards, bread and salt were distributed to symbolize the abundance of food for the next year.The Surp Vartanants Armenian Church is located in the Ferik y neighborhood of stanbul 's i li district, where many members of the local Armenian community reside. Armenians are Turkey 's largest Christian minority population and celebrate the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem as well as the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6.
