Emblazoned across the outside of each boot is a simple, incontrovertible statement that has become a rallying cry in the fight to end systemic racism: Black Lives Matter.
On the evening of April 27, 1962, patrolmen Frank Tomlinson and Stanley Kensic stopped Monroe X Jones and Fred X Jingles as they unloaded clothing out of the back of a Buick by the Nation of Islam s mosque in South Los Angeles. The ensuing altercation with police, dubbed a blazing gunfight and a riot by the Los Angeles Times, ended with seven unarmed Muslims in jured and one dead. William X Rogers was left paralyzed, and mosque secretary Ronald X Stokes was killed, shot through the heart as he walked toward officer Donald Weese with his palms raised toward the sky. Weese later told an all white coroner s jury that Stokes came towards me, chanting. He put his hands out I thought he was going to choke me. As the other men lay on the ground, handcuffed and bleeding, they held hands and chanted Alla hu akbar, God is most great. In August that same year, twelve Muslim men at Folsom Prison were holding a meeting in the prison yard when a sergeant began snapping photographs of the gathering. As the officer approached, one of the men proclaimed, They want to take our picture, so let s give them a good one. Another suggested that they face the east and pray to Allah. The group lined up with their hands raised waist high, palms facing up, and prayed. In both instances, Muslims in the Nation of Islam (NOI), confronted with police violence and state surveillance, responded with nonviolent protest in the form of prayer. Where do such stories fit within our narrative of the civil rights era? These episodes demonstrate that challenges to policing and prisons were central to the postwar Black Freedom movement, and the Nation of Islam was at the forefront of that struggle. They show Black Nationalism as an ideological current of Black politics, which continued to gain strength in the years between the dissolution of the United Negro Improvement Association in the interwar period and the rise of Black Power in the late 1960s, a period portrayed as Black Nationalist decline.

NEW DELHI: India added a record number of coronavirus cases Sunday, approaching Russia as the world s third most infected nation as it opens a mass treatment center in the capital to fight the pandemic. The health ministry reported just under 25,000 cases and 613 deaths in 24 hours the biggest daily spike since the first case was detected in late January. The sharp rise came as Delhi started treating patients at a spiritual center converted into a sprawling isolation facility and hospital with 10,000 beds, many made of cardboard. About the size of 20 football fields, the facility will treat mild symptomatic and asymptomatic cases. State government officials fear the metropolis could record more than half a million cases by the end of the month. India s surge took the total tally to more than 673,000 cases and 19,268 deaths, with the country on the cusp of surpassing badly hit Russia. A strict lockdown in place since late March has gradually been lifted, allowing most activities as the economy nose dived amid the shutdown. Schools, metro trains in cities, cinemas, gyms and swimming pools remain closed however and international flights are still grounded. Authorities have made wearing masks mandatory in public places, while large gatherings are banned and shops and other public establishments are required to implement social distancing. The western state of Maharashtra, the worst hit state and home to financial hub Mumbai, recorded over 7,000 new cases. Southern Tamil Nadu state and the national capital New Delhi recorded more than 4,200 and 2,500 fresh cases respectively. Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, Tamil Nadu s capital, are the worst affected cities. The national government says it has tackled the virus well but critics allege India is conducting very few tests, leaving the true scale of the pandemic unknown. ROME: Ennio Morricone, one of the world s best known and most prolific film composers, died in Rome on Monday at the age of 91. Tributes poured in for the man who composed the music for about 500 films, including his old childhood friend Sergio Leone s 1966 spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Quentin Tarantino s The Hateful Eight for which he finally won an Oscar in 2016. Morricone died in hospital where he was being treated for a fractured femur following a fall, according to a statement from lawyer and family friend Giorgio Assuma. Morricone passed away in the early hours of July 6 with the comfort of his faith, the statement said. He remained fully lucid and with great dignity right until the end, it added. Tributes began pouring in for the maestro soon after his death was announced. We will remember forever and with infinite gratitude the artistic genius of maestro Ennio Morricone, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said. He made us dream, he moved us and made us think, writing unforgettable notes that will remain forever in the history of music and cinema, he said on Twitter. Italian film actress Monica Bellucci said of Morricone that there are people who have the ability to make the world better because they know how to create beauty, while Gilles Jacob, the former head of the Cannes film festival, described him as the emperor of film music. Famed Italian conductor Riccardo Muti called Morricone a master for whom I nurtured friendship and admiration, describing him as an extraordinary musician who could jump with ease from film scores to classical music. Born on November 10, 1928, Morricone began composing at the tender age of six, and at just 10 he enrolled in trumpet school at the prestigious Saint Cecilia conservatory in Rome. He played in jazz bands throughout the 1940s before beginning to ghost write for film and theater. In 1961, at the age of 33, he collaborated with director Luciano Salce in Mission Ultra secrete before going on to gain fame with the score for A Fistful of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood in 1964. Before winning the elusive Oscar for best film score at age 87 in 2016, the Rome born son of a trumpeter had been nominated no fewer than five times. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences embarrassed that such a talent had not been recognized sooner presented him with a lifetime achievement award in 2007. Morricone s previous nominations were for Days of Heaven (1978), The Mission (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Bugsy (1991) and Malena (2000). Although he is most closely associated in the public mind with Leone s westerns starring Eastwood, Morricone s composition for Roland Joffe s Jesuit drama The Mission is considered by many critics to be his cinematic masterpiece, an epic and eclectic reflection of South America s musical melting pot. Throughout his career, Morricone worked with some of Hollywood s most acclaimed filmmakers as well as arthouse directors. After his collaboration with Leone, he worked with Italian screen legends Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini and later with the likes of Pedro Almodovar, Bernardo Bertolucci, Brian De Palma and Oliver Stone.

On the evening of June 15, hundreds of Indian and Chinese troops laid aside their arms and took on each other in a brawl on the ridge of a mountain in Ladakh, a desolate high altitude plateau in the northeast Kashmir. The clashes, in which clubs and stones were used, left a bloody trail of dead and wounded soldiers on a frontier that had not seen such violence in the last 45 years. And as India buried 20 slain soldiers from the fight, it began to contend with the high political cost of its ill thought out actions in the Himalayan region.
