But that could change, as missions to Venus are two of the four finalists for the agency s next two $500 million planetary missions, NASA announced today.

From ancient Chinese medicine that saved millions of malaria impacted lives to the first mobile X ray units helping wounded soldiers, these are the stories of brilliant minds. For centuries, women have made significant contributions to the field of science. They ve discovered life saving remedies, devised world altering inventions, and produced far reaching research, but in many cases their invaluable advances are minimized or neglected. For too long, the STEM fields have been shaped by gender biases that exclude women and girls, past, present, and future. Unequal access to education, technologies, and leadership positions have steered countless bright female minds away from STEM careers and stalled their progress.

As my colleague Aaron Barnhart wrote last fall, Stumptown is instantly recognizable as a PI procedural in the mold of Veronica Mars, or Magnum, P.I., or especially The Rockford Files: a smart, scrappy investigator solves clients #39; problems, generally via extra legal methods and situationally ethical ingenuity; the vagaries of the gig economy sometimes force our hero to take jobs that don #39;t line up with his or her values; there #39;s a little low stakes fisticuffs or minor physical peril along the way; and the protagonist develops a grudging mutual respect with a by the books local cop. What makes Stumptown refreshing is how it transcends the tropes of the genre to tell its specific story. Our investigator is Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders, formerly of How I Met Your Mother). She #39;s an Afghanistan War veteran who has returned to her home town of Portland, Oregon (the titular Stumptown), land is iving with her brother, 20 year old Ansel (Cole Sibus), who has Downs syndrome. Dex continues to experience symptoms of PTSD and flashbacks to her military service, which she #39;s self medicating by drinking and gambling at a local tribal casino that happens to be operated by Sue Lynn Blackbird (See co star Tantoo Cardinal); both Dex and Sue Lynn are still grieving Sue Lynn #39;s late son Benny mdash; the love of Dex #39;s life, who Sue Lynn prevented from marrying Dex after the two dated in college, and who was married to another woman when he died in Afghanistan. When she #39;s not drinking at the casino, Dex is drinking at Bad Alibi, a bar owned by her friend (an ex con and one time hookup) Grey McConnell (New Girl alumnus Jake Johnson), where Ansel also works. So, by centering multiple Indigenous characters, the show can work in plotlines that revolve around tribal politics. By centering a character with an intellectual disability, the show can explore the tension between Ansel #39;s desire to assert himself as an adult and his primary guardian Dex #39;s worries about his independence. And the door is open for the show to dig further into what life is like for people who were formerly incarcerated, veterans with mental health issues, the complex economics of tribal gaming, and so on mdash; all subject matters rarely seen on other TV shows, and practically never seen on a network show.
EmailPinterestCourtesy of Instagram @heynicenailsFacebookEmailPinterestLook, it #x27;s definitely not every day that you see a dick themed manicure. So when several photos of penis nail art (yes, that did feel weird writing ) started popping up on my Instagram explore page, I simply had to know more. A few emails later and I have the whole backstory and trust me, it #x27;s not what you would expect. It #x27;s not a funny joke between friends or the work of someone who specializes in sexual nail art (is that even a thing?) but rather, a social worker #x27;s silly way of distracting her clients who are HIV positive and dealing with homelessness.

It ''s not hard to see the ubiquitous influence of that iconic series, which premiered 30 years ago this week, across the last three decades of American adult animation. Family Guy, King of the Hill, Bob ''s Burgers and many others have all featured some variation of the slovenly dad, the beleaguered wife, the rabble rousing roost of kids and an animal who dig themselves into and out of minor crises each 22 minute episode. Non family based shows, from Robot Chicken to Archer, have also drawn heavily from Matt Groening ''s hyper referential style, irreverence and slapstick humor, with South Park dedicating an entire episode to the impact and dominance of its yellow predecessors. But while The Simpsons may still be the North Star of adult animation, it ''s not the only blueprint anymore. Over the past five years, a generation of shows challenging norms in content, tone and form has exploded onto TV and streaming platforms. These shows mdash;including Netflix ''s BoJack Horseman and Big Mouth, Adult Swim ''s Rick and Morty and Amazon ''s Undone mdash;explore depression and mental health in profound ways, feature characters that age and mature from season to season and sometimes don ''t even aim for laughs at all.
Federal research agencies will be under increased pressure to reduce their use of monkeys, dogs, and cats when President Donald Trump signs the final 2020 U.S. spending bill this week. Language pushed by animal advocacy groups will require the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to explore alternatives to the use of nonhuman primates, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to come up with a detailed plan for the reduction and retirement of its monkeys, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to reduce or eliminate its use of cats, dogs, and monkeys within the next 5 years.
The film, a coming of age period drama which has been written and directed by Gerwig, has a star studded cast which includes the likes of Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Timoth e Chalamet, Meryl Streep and more. The picture, which arrives as the eighth film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott ''s 1868 novel of the same name, explores the lives of the March sisters in 1860s New England in the aftermath of the American Civil War.
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA In December 2018, the scientists behind the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS REx), NASA s $800 million mission to grab a sample from the asteroid Bennu and return the rock to Earth, received a nasty shock. Rather than smooth plains of beachlike rubble, Bennu s coal dark surface was a jumble of large boulders, with few gaps that might allow the spacecraft s sampling arm to shoot in and sample its surface grit, as designed. After extensively mapping the half kilometer wide asteroid, including flying by a final four of candidate sites at just 1 kilometer above its surface, mission leaders today announced their primary sampling target: a 16 meter wide site called Nightingale that sits within a crater on the asteroid s northern flank. If all goes as planned, in late August 2020 OSIRIS REx will undertake a risky pogo stick like maneuver, briefly touching down on Bennu s surface, sucking fine grit into a sampling arm, then pushing off.

Millennial women accounted for 82% of US births in 2016. At the same time, millennials made up 29% of the adult US population and more than a third of the US workforce. This demographic shift has applied upward pressure on companies to provide basic benefits like parental leave and childcare assistance, though making good on this is far from universal. While that fight rages on, many millennial parents are leveraging digital technological advances to redefine the workplace. Here are four ways millennial parents will impact the future of work, according to trend data.
