SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA In December 2018, the scientists behind the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS REx), NASA s $800 million mission to grab a sample from the asteroid Bennu and return the rock to Earth, received a nasty shock. Rather than smooth plains of beachlike rubble, Bennu s coal dark surface was a jumble of large boulders, with few gaps that might allow the spacecraft s sampling arm to shoot in and sample its surface grit, as designed. After extensively mapping the half kilometer wide asteroid, including flying by a final four of candidate sites at just 1 kilometer above its surface, mission leaders today announced their primary sampling target: a 16 meter wide site called Nightingale that sits within a crater on the asteroid s northern flank. If all goes as planned, in late August 2020 OSIRIS REx will undertake a risky pogo stick like maneuver, briefly touching down on Bennu s surface, sucking fine grit into a sampling arm, then pushing off.
SAN FRANCISCO mdash; We now know where NASA''s first asteroid sample return mission aims to snag its otherworldly stuff.
WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. mdash; Rocket Lab officially opened its new U.S. launch site for business today (Dec. 12) and the U.S. Air Force will be the first to fly from the new complex.
I am an astrophysicist and am interested in a wide range of theoretical problems in astrophysics, from the formation of the very first galaxies to the gravitational interactions of black holes, stars and even planets. Black holes are intriguing systems, and supermassive black holes and the dense stellar environments that surround them represent one of the most extreme places in our universe. The supermassive black hole that lurks at the center of our galaxy, called Sgr A , has a mass of about 4 million times that of our Sun. A black hole is a place in space where gravity is so strong that neither particles or light can escape from it. Surrounding Sgr A is a dense cluster of stars. Precise measurements of the orbits of these stars allowed astronomers to confirm the existence of this supermassive black hole and to measure its mass. For more than 20 years, scientists have been monitoring the orbits of these stars around the supermassive black hole. Based on what we 've seen, my colleagues and I show that if there is a friend there, it might be a second black hole nearby that is at least 100,000 times the mass of the Sun.

Our home galaxy has a new, super precise mass measurement: about 890 billion times the mass of our sun. That''s 3.9 tredecillion lbs. (1.8 tredecillion kilograms), a tredecillion being a 1 with 42 zeros after it, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That amounts to about 6 billion billion billion elephants, 296 quadrillion Earth masses or 135 times the mass of the supermassive black hole in the image released back in April.

The thing is, much of the information we need on a daily basis happens in interactions with the people around us. Sometimes that information isn #39;t especially accessible or useful, especially when you #39;re traveling somewhere that you don #39;t speak the language. Until now.Google is rolling out Interpreter Mode, which debuted earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, to iOS and Android devices. Until now, the real time translation tool was only available on Google Nest Hub devices, which you aren #39;t likely to have handy when you #39;re traveling in a foreign country and need to get directions or a restroom.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition where the insulin your pancreas makes can ''t work properly, or your pancreas can ''t make enough insulin. This impaired process can pose serious health risks if you have type 2 diabetes because the release of insulin helps to regulate blood sugar levels. If left untreated, unregulated blood sugar levels can lead to life threatening health complications such as heart disease and stroke.Luckily, making simple dietary tweaks can help to control blood sugar levels and certain foods have been shown to be more effective than others at fuelling this process.
MORE THAN 30 years ago, doctors in the northern city of Daqing began a pioneering long term study into the prevention of type 2 diabetes, a disease which was then thought to affect about 1% of Chinese. When doctors, academics and officials convened there this autumn to discuss the conclusions and promote prevention work, they faced a very different reality. About 11% of Chinese adults now have the condition, nearly the proportion in America and twice the level in Britain. Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common globally, but in recent years its prevalence has been growing fastest in China.Diabetes is a dysfunction in the body s regulation of blood sugar levels. Type 1 is rare and usually shows up early in life, triggered by factors that are not yet well understood. It can kill swiftly unless managed with daily injections of insulin. Type 2 is far more common, accounting for more than 90% of cases worldwide. It tends to develop in adults, especially if they are overweight or do not exercise much. It can usually be controlled with pills and lifestyle changes, and can sometimes be reversed. Both types, if not well treated, can cause complications such as organ damage, blindness, strokes and heart attacks.
