TwitterEmailPhotograph: Art Streiber AUGUST FacebookTwitterEmailMidway through In the Dream House, her memoir about an abusive relationship with a former girlfriend, Carmen Maria Machado makes a painful observation: "Putting language to something for which you have no language is no easy feat. " She #x27;s referring to Adam #x27;s job in Genesis of naming the animals, but she #x27;s also confronting the core challenge of her book. Domestic abuse in queer relationships is rarely written about when your love is taboo, so are its violences. Machado must create a new tongue. No other writer is better suited. The author #x27;s previous book, Her Body and Other Parties, is a collection of short stories so effortlessly wide ranging they pivot from fantasy to romance to humor in the blink of an eye. Machado can always find the words to convey what she means, even when she #x27;s using language in ways it #x27;s never been used before. She is a master of bending genre tropes to her whims painting family dramas and domestic microagressions as the horror tales they are, demonstrating women #x27;s invisibility by literally making them see through. (FX is currently developing the National Book Award nominated book into a Black Mirror style anthology series.) She uses the language of genre to tell stories genre books often ignore. It s easy to call what she does speculative fiction, this generation #x27;s Angela Carter, but hers is a genre unto itself.
Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL were launched yesterday, and something was noticed soon after it was unveiled the smartphones don't ship with a pair of earphones in the box. This is a little surprising since the company shipped a pair of Type C earphones along with the Google Pixel 3. That's not all, the company is also skipping out on a USB Type C to 3.5mm adapters in the box. These adapters are handy for those who wish to use their regular pair of headphones with the device. On the Google Store US page, the company clearly details what is bundled in the box of the Google Pixel 4 and the Google Pixel 4 XL. The phones come with an 18W USB Type C power adapter, 1 metre USB Type C to USB Type C cable, a Quick Switch Adapter, and a SIM tool, apart from the Quick Start Guide. There is no wired headphone, nor is there a USB Type C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in the box.
TwitterEmailFacebookTwitterEmailSay what you will about the US health care system; if you #x27;re trying to stay healthy in space, it s a dream. Just ask Mike Massimino, a former NASA astronaut who has flown to space twice for extended stays.Getting medical treatment on the International Space Station is complicated, so NASA does its best to ensure astronauts are in peak physical condition before they leave for the final frontier. This involves a regimented exercise schedule in the weeks leading up to launch, as well as an extensive physical examination. If NASA doctors find anything that might cause serious health problems for an astronaut, like a predisposition to getting kidney stones, the astronaut probably won t fly.

But fear not, deals are also in the autumn air, including one great deal on our favorite Android phone of 2019. So far, at least.Google #x27;s Pixel 3A (9 10, WIRED Recommends) is anomalous in the Android world. It #x27;s fairly powerful, has an amazing camera, charges quickly, has a headphone jack, and doesn #x27;t cost a fortune. It feels like a premium phone without the premium price tag. And right now it #x27;s on sale for $300 $349.
TwitterEmailTo make a 3D printable rocket, Relativity Space simplified the design of many components, including the engine.Photograph: RelativityFacebookTwitterEmailFor a factory where robots toil around the clock to build a rocket with almost no human labor, the sound of grunts echoing across the parking lot make for a jarring contrast. That s Keanu Reeves stunt gym, says Tim Ellis, the chief executive and cofounder of Relativity Space, a startup that wants to combine 3D printing and artificial intelligence to do for the rocket what Henry Ford did for the automobile. As we walk among the robots occupying Relativity s factory, he points out the just completed upper stage of the company s rocket, which will soon be shipped to Mississippi for its first tests. Across the way, he says, gesturing to the outside world, is a recording studio run by Snoop Dogg.

TwitterEmailThe spread of all electric fleets could make it easier to charge a passenger car.Photograph: Patrick Pleul Getty ImagesFacebookTwitterEmailLet s put Amazon s order for 100,000 electric delivery vans by 2030 into perspective. Today, FedEx uses 85,000 motorized vehicles to deliver packages around the world. UPS has around 123,000 package cars, vans, tractors, and motorcycles, including about 10,000 the company says use alternative fuel and advanced technology. One hundred thousand delivery vans? That s a lot.For proponents of electric vehicles, it s a big opportunity and not just for Rivian, the decade old startup in which Amazon has invested, and from which it will buy the vans. Rivian, which has not yet put a vehicle into production, has a busy few years ahead of it.
Amazon is expected to lose hundreds of members of its workforce on September 20 when employees walk out as part of the youth driven Global Climate Strike. Employees planning to take part in the walkout say they want Amazon to reach zero emissions by 2030, use electric delivery vehicles, and end contracts with fossil fuel companies that use its technology products, according to Geek Wire.Over 900 Amazon employees so far have signed an internal petition saying they are planning the walkout as part of the Global Climate Strike and hope their actions will have some impact on the company. One employee who signed the petition told Wired that she has the chance here to influence Amazon to become a climate leader, and I think that s the biggest impact that I personally can bring to the fight. TwitterEmailGetty ImagesFacebookTwitterEmailLate last Thursday, Google security researchers dropped a bombshell: Someone had launched a sustained attack against iPhone users that compromised their devices almost instantly when they visited certain websites. The campaign forced a fundamental shift in how security professionals think about iOS. And now, after a week of silence, Apple has finally given its side of the story. In a brief statement, Apple confirmed that the attacks had targeted China #x27;s oppressed Uyghur Muslim community, as had previously been reported. But the statement also called out multiple points of contention with how Google characterized the attack.
TwitterEmailCredit: Drew Angerer Getty ImagesFacebookTwitterEmailWednesday evening during CNN s climate change town hall, the gods of politicking looked down on Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, and they smiled. In the audience, a man named David with small glasses and pony tailed gray hair stood up and said he d lost his home in Paradise, California, to last year s Camp Fire, which was supercharged by climate change. I am so sorry, David. I visited Paradise while the embers were still burning there, the California senator said. The only thing that stood were the chimneys, were the fireplaces, that to me looked like tombstones in a graveyard. The devastation was enormous. There were firefighters that were fighting fires while they knew their own homes were burning to the ground. And so you are a living testament, and thank you for your courage to share your story.
TwitterEmailJustin Sullivan Getty ImagesFacebookTwitterEmailGoogle has just released the final version of its new operating system for Android phones. Though it s been available as a beta release under the name Android Q, the new version is named well, it has nothing to do with the letter Q. It s just Android 10, which makes it the first time in 10 years that the mobile operating system doesn t have a dessert themed name. Rest assured, though, some of its new features are still pretty sweet. (You knew that was coming.)Here are five features to look forward to in Android 10 some of which have been available in the prerelease, plus a couple that were not. Also keep in mind that not all of these features are launching right away, and when they do they might be available only on Google #x27;s own Pixel devices first.
TwitterEmailA newly revealed attack hit thousands of iPhones with sophisticated spyware, upending long held assumptions about the nature of iOS hacks.Johannes Eisele Getty ImagesFacebookTwitterEmailHacking the iPhone has long been considered a rarified endeavor, undertaken by sophisticated nation states against only their most high value targets. But a discovery by a group of Google researchers has turned that notion on its head: For two years, someone has been exploiting a rich collection of iPhone vulnerabilities with anything but restraint or careful targeting. And they #x27;ve indiscriminately hacked thousands of iPhones just by getting them to visit a website. On Thursday evening, Google #x27;s Project Zero security research team revealed a broad campaign of iPhone hacking. A handful of websites in the wild had assembled five so called exploit chains tools that link together security vulnerabilities, allowing a hacker to penetrate each layer of iOS digital protections. The rare and intricate chains of code took advantage of a total of 14 security flaws, targeting everything from the browser #x27;s "sandbox " isolation mechanism to the core of the operating system known as the kernel, ultimately gaining complete control over the phone.

And they ve pledged $60 million to fund a state ballot measure aimed at keeping drivers from being classified as employees.Uber and Lyft said on Wednesday that they re willing to pay California drivers a minimum of approximately $21 per hour, including some expenses, though that pay rate would only apply while the drivers are on a trip. (More on that later.) They say they would provide drivers access to robust new benefits, like paid time off, sick leave, and a form of workers compensation. The companies also said they would empower drivers to have a collective voice and to influence decisions about their work. The proposal did not, notably, include the word union .
The operating system currently known as Android Q has been in public beta since March. There has been much online speculation about what Q themed dessert Google might use as the official name Quindim Queen s cake Quiche but a Google announcement today made it clear that it won t be any of those. In fact, there won t be a name at all. The new name of Android s OS will be (everyone s doing a drum roll, right?) Android 10. Womp womp. "It was always hard to find a name that was truly relatable. Launched in 2018, NASA s Parker Solar Probe will take years to swoop into orbit around the Sun, but once it s there, its main goal is to figure out exactly what drives the solar wind, the constant stream of highly charged particles that are spit out from the openings in the surface. The probe will also study the Sun s magnetic field. Solar weather is important to understand because those particles and blasts of radiation can affect our satellites, causing communication delays or even blackouts.
But in response to one analyst s question, about how the regulations in New York had affected the company s bottom line, Khosrowshahi got a bit spicy, at least for him: I think anyone who tells you that the changes in New York City are good is he trailed off for a moment. It s malarkey, frankly.
