It s that time of the year where everyone wants to dive in and give their own rendition of holiday classics, and the Oklahoma rock band The Flaming Lips are no different. This year the band decided to drop a cover and psychedelic music video to the songs Peace on Earth Little Drummer Boy. The song preferences are considered to be a homage to David Bowie and Bing Crosby s 1977 medley of the same songs from the TV special Bing Crosby;s Merrie Olde Christmas. In the video, the group are dripping in bejeweled robes, blue and green face paint, Roman helmets and crowns and shimmering bright wigs. Guitarist and keyboardist Steven Drozd is the only exception to this rule as he s seen dressed relatively normal compared to his bandmates. The video and the song were recorded at Wayne Coyne s Pink Floor Studios in Oklahoma City, with Coyne and George Salisbury directing the short clip.
The Flaming Lips have shared a cover of two holiday classics, "Peace on Earth" and "Little Drummer Boy," which they have mashed up together. The track was shared via a strange video that features most the band in strange makeup and alien outfits, all except Steve Drozd for some reason, who is dressed fairly normally. The track is in homage to Bing Crosby and David Bowie, who also mashed up the two songs in 1977 as part of a TV special, Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas, which was recorded just five weeks before Crosby's death and broadcast after his passing. The Bowie Crosby version was eventually released as a single in 1982. Watch both versions below.Read our 2017 cover story interview with The Flaming Lips on Oczy Mlody from our 15th Anniversary Issue
The video was reportedly recorded and filmed at Pink Floor Studios in Oklahoma, which belong to the band;s singer, Wayne Coyne. Coyne also teamed up with George Salisbury to co direct the psychedelic video, which starts in presenting the band dressed in Ancient Roman outfits and painted green faces before percussionists Nick Ley and Matt Duckworth begin playing the rolling snare line intro to ;Little Drummer Boy;. Nearly every member of the band is presented in their own unique outfit, but it;s singer Wayne Coyne who is seen sporting the best combination of purple face paint, an Uncle Sam wig, and a crown which would even make Good King Wenceslas mighty jealous. The band gives a lovely rendition of the first verse to ;Little Drummer Boy; before Coyne takes lead vocal duties when transitioning into ;Peace On Earth; starting at the video;s 1:09 minute mark.Coyne clearly sings out the lyrics to the song originally penned by Ian Fraser Larry Grossman Alan Kohan while his bandmates continue on with "Little Drummer Boy " verses as the backing lines. The mashup really begins to liven up with a standard rock and roll beat by the time Coyne takes listeners into the bridge, before eventually bringing the songs back down for a quiet and surprisingly subtle end.
Today THE FLAMING LIPS celebrate the spirit of the season by releasing a performance video of the Christmas classics "Peace On Earth" "Little Drummer Boy".
