The World Economic Forum (WEF) announced in May 2019 it selected a group that included the European Space Agency, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Texas at Austin and Bryce Space and Technology to develop a Space Sustainability Rating system that will score satellites based on how well they ensure the long term sustainability of space.The rating is intended to be a positive incentive so that satellite operators have a desire to increase their responsible behavior, not through law or economics, but through social and peer pressure, said Danielle Wood, a professor at the MIT Media Lab, during a Jan. 15 presentation about the project at the Second International Academy of Astronautics Conference on Space Situational Awareness here.
GSAT 30 is a communication satellite configured on Isro''s enhanced I 3K Bus structure to provide communication services from Geostationary orbit in C and Ku bands. The satellite derives its heritage from Isro''s earlier INSAT GSAT satellite series.The satellite is to serve as a replacement to INSAT 4A spacecraft services with enhanced coverage. GSAT 30 provides Indian mainland and islands coverage in Ku band and extended coverage in C band covering Gulf countries, a large number of Asian countries and Australia, the space agency informed.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch a communication satellite GSAT 30 onboard the Ariane 5 launch vehicle (VA 251) from French Guiana on January 17. The 3,357kg satellite is slated to blast off from the Ariane Launch Complex at Kourou, a French territory located along the northeastern coast of South America, at 2:35am IST.

China Friday launched one of the world''s most powerful rockets in a major step forward for its planned mission to Mars in 2020. Chennai: The year 2019 was a year of several new beginnings for India''s space sector that is now on Mission 2.0 mode.The year also saw the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scoring a couple of half centuries, like putting into orbit 50 foreign satellites and also sending up its 50th Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
ISRO was initially called the Indian National Committee for Space Research and was put together during the time of Jawaharlal Nehru under the Department of Atomic Energy back in 1962. Pushed by Vikram Sarabhai with the idea of space research, INCOSPAR expanded and became ISRO in 1969, under the DAE. Then in 1972, the Indian government setup a Space Commission and also a Department of Space (DOS) which the Indian Space Research Organisation came under.Three years later, India''s first satellite Aryabhatta named after the famous mathematician was launched by the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1975. In 1980, ISRO launched the Rohini satellite using the SLV 3 which was made in India. There were two other launch vehicles Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) for placing satellites into polar orbits. The other one was called the GSLV Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle used for placing the satellite in geostationary orbit.
Apple has a secret team working on satellites and related wireless technology, striving to find new ways to beam data such as Internet connectivity directly to its devices, according to people familiar with the work.The Cupertino, California based iPhone maker has about a dozen engineers from the aerospace, satellite and antenna design industries working on the project with the goal of deploying their results within five years, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal company efforts. Work on the project is still early and could be abandoned, the people said, and a clear direction and use for satellites hasn''t been finalised. Still, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has shown interest in the project, indicating it''s a company priority.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of scientists estimated that the gas well owned by ExxonMobil leaked around 120 metric tons of methane per hour over a period of 20 days before the company managed to fix the problem. This amounted to a total of more than 50,000 tons of methane.The authors led by Sudhanshu Pandey from SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research said that the hourly emission rate from the leak was about twice that of the widely reported event at an oil and gas storage facility in Alison Canyon, California, which took place in 2015 the largest known methane leak in the country.
