Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) today released the first illuminated image of surface of moon taken by Imaging Infrared Spectrometer (IIRS) payload on board Chandrayaan 2. The space agency tweeted and shared the image on its account, See the first illuminated image of the lunar surface acquired by #Chandrayaan2 s IIRS payload. IIRS is designed to measure reflected sunlight from the lunar surface in narrow and contiguous spectral channels.
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has taken a fresh set of pictures under better lighting conditions of the area where the Indian moon lander Vikram likely ended up and experts will be making a rigorous search for it, according to LRO Project Scientist Noah Petro."The lighting conditions on Monday were much more favourable, (with) less shadow in the region" compared to last month, Petro told IANS on Wednesday.

That surpasses Jupiter, which has 79, and makes Saturn the planet with the most known moons in our solar system.

The data for the Moon Kit comes from NASA;s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which has been in orbit of the moon since 2009. Its original mission was just one year, but it;s still going strong. During its time studying the moon, the LRO has produced a 3D map of almost the entire surface 98.2 percent of it, to be exact. The only parts of the moon not covered are the polar areas in deep shadow. The Moon Kit comes from NASA designer Ernie Wright, who works in the Scientific Visualization Studio at NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center. Wright initially created the Moon Kit as a tool for the Scientific Visualization Studio, but he received so many requests for the data that he decided to make the data set available to all designers publicly.
The space agency along with trying to communicate with Vikram lander and Gaganyaan, they are also working on a total of seven interplanetary missions. Among the destinations are Mars, the Moon, Venus, the Sun's corona and interplanetary space to study space.
The moons are all similar in size, spanning about three miles across. But 17 of the 20 have a retrograde orbit of Saturn, meaning they essentially orbit backwards from the planet and other moons.Carnegie Institute of Science astronomer Scott Sheppard and his team used the Subaru telescope in Hawaii to find the moons. Last year, Sheppard and his team located 12 new moons around Jupiter, including one with a retrograde orbit.

The data is based upon inputs from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which ranges from normal pictures of the lunar landscape to highly detailed topical maps courtesy of the laser altimeter attached with the orbital lander. The altimeter here, basically sends a strong pulse at the surface of the moon, and measures things like distance from surface, type of surface etc. based on the reflection of the sameThis data is then used to create a displacement map, which can be laid down on top of a photographic map to create a virtual, topographic globe I know it sounds fairly complicated, but it is much simpler and a very useful for artists and creators, who now have an actual, live frame of reference.
