An asteroid impact 65 million years ago in what is modern day Mexico, set off a global chain of events that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. More recently, in September 1859, a powerful solar storm known as the Carrington Event, spewed enough energy at the Earth to cause widespread tech blackouts and power grid failures if it hit today. And about six billion years from now, our life giving Sun will expand into a Red Giant star, swallowing the planets Mercury, Venus and maybe even the Earth. These are just some of the space based threats that could one day render Earth inhospitable or destroy our homeworld completely. It is because of threats like these that many scientists are concerned about the future of mankind.

Sangareddy: A joint research by Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT H), Harvard University, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada a Canadian government agency, has been researching how climate change impacts mercury accumulation in fish. The seminal work was published in the August 2019 issues of the prestigious international peer review journal Nature .Studies by the international team of scientists found that although there has been a decrease in levels of mercury pollution due to various environmental regulations, the amounts of mercury found in fish have been different in different species some types of fish have less mercury than before, and some, alarmingly more. These variations have been a result of changes in sea temperature in recent years and the changes in the dietary pattern due to overfishing.
The concentration of methylmercury an organic compound which can cause severe damage to the brain and nervous system rose by 23% in cod and by 27% in bluefin tuna in the Atlantic Ocean's Gulf of Maine over about three decades, it said."Methylmercury is ... particularly harmful during the third trimester of pregnancy when the brain is developing most rapidly and for young children," said Elsie Sunderland, co author of the paper which was published in the journal Nature.
PARIS: The record shattering heatwave that baked much of northern Europe last month was likely between 1.5 to 3.0 degrees Celsius hotter due to man made climate change, an international team of scientists said on Friday. The three day peak saw temperature records tumble in Belgium, the Netherlands and Britain while the city of Paris experienced its hottest day ever with the mercury topping out at 42.6C (108.7 Fahrenheit) on July 25.

Apollo 11 mdash; and the three astronauts aboard mdash; may have made the most momentous of space history, but it would not have been possible were it not for the missions mdash; and the sacrifices mdash; that came before. NASA;s Mercury and Gemini programs proved that American hardware and astronauts could circle the earth and come back safely. Neither program went flawlessly, but the problems discovered along the way mdash; and the solutions devised to fix them mdash; helped to make each mission safer than the last. All the same, the Apollo program mdash; the missions meant to bring astronauts to the Moon mdash; began in disaster. On January 27, 1967, a damaged wire sparked a fire during a test, killing all three Apollo 1 crew members aboard their spacecraft while still on the launch pad. Astronauts wouldn 't fly on an Apollo mission for nearly two more years, when Apollo 7 launched in October of 1968. Apollos 8, 9 and 10 would soon follow, all of which involved testing equipment in preparation for the moon landing to come. That moment finally occurred on July 20, 1969, when the ”Eagle ” lander touched down on the lunar surface, and Neil Armstrong radioed home some of the most famous words of the 20th century.
