Even months after the Supreme Court's pathbreaking verdict abolishing the Section 377 of the IPC, India, it seems, is not a safe place for homosexuals. In yet another hate crime against lesbians, two women, in their early twenties, on July 28, were allegedly thrown out of a hotel in Chennai. There were allegations that the behaviour of the young couple led to the discomfort of other guests present in the hotel. The incident comes to light after one of the girls named Rasika Gopalakrishnan took to social media to narrate the ordeal she and her friend Shivangi Singh faced last month. In a hard hitting Facebook post, Gopalakrishnan said, "My friend and I decided to go to a bar called The Slate Hotels on a Saturday night. While dancing, there were 4 to 5 men who were standing at the bar and were constantly staring at us, making us very uncomfortable".

But Asian elephants from Southern India could be changing their social lives, to adapt to human use landscapes that are fast replacing their natural habitats.Young male elephants, which are typically solitary, are now forming unusually large and more long term, all male herds, finds a study published in Scientific Reports last week. This adaptation could be an effort to learn the ropes from older, more knowledgeable males on how to avoid getting killed in these areas that pose unnaturally high risks to elephants.

Top sources in the BJP say the Modi 2.0 Cabinet will be a lot younger than the earlier one and nearly half the ministers would be fresh entrants. It is expected that 45 47 ministers will take oath with the Prime Minister. The new entrants will not only bring energy but also determine the party's new priorities in terms of caste equations and geography. It will also accommodate partners like the JD(U), the AIADMK and the Shiv Sena (its sitting Cabinet minister has lost in these elections).Six ministers including Anant Geete (Heavy Industries Minister), Hardeep Puri (Urban Development Minister), Pon Radhakrishna (Minister of State for Finance), Manoj Sinha (Minister of State for Railways) and Alphons Kannanthanam (Minister of State for Tourism) have lost in the recent posts.
The biggest democratic election in the history of the world has concluded, and Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi has been given a second five year term by voters. Since the time when Jawaharlal Nehru, riding on the aura of Mahatma Gandhi, whose chosen candidate for the most important job in India he was, ruled hearts across the country for about fifteen years before the 1962 war with China created waves of disillusionment with his performance in office. Before that, Nehru was given a sheaf of blank cheques on policy by the people of India. Although much of his party wanted to nourish a strong private sector, especially C. Rajagopalachari and Sardar Patel, the first Prime Minister of the Republic of India moved the country in the same direction the Soviet Union had taken after 1917. The commanding heights of the economy were reserved for the public sector, and as a consequence, Korean and Japanese companies (not to mention several others) rapidly outstripped their Indian peers as a consequence of the severe constraints that were placed on their growth. Indeed, under the Industrial Development and Regulation Act enacted by his daughter Indira Gandhi, it became a criminal act for a company to produce beyond its registered capacity. Efficiency and the economies of scale created by size became taboo. Small wonder that India became known for products such as the Hindustan Motors Ambassador, a copy of a UK car that had lapsed into unpopularity in its home country. All that changed in the Mark II model seemed to be the grille, while there was a saying that the only part of many cars that did not make any noise was the horn. Taxes rose and rose and rose, touching a marginal rate of 97%, again under Indira Gandhi, who chose a youthful and very loyal and socialistic Pranab Mukherjee to be her Finance Minister. Economist Raj Krishna termed the growth rate under the years of Nehruvian economic policies as the Hindu Rate of Growth (of about 2%), but it should more properly have been called the Nehru Rate of Growth . In foreign policy, Nehru took an idealistic stance, refusing for example to accept the offer of the Ranas to secede to India, or the Sultan of Oman to take control of Gwadar, or the US offer to replace China with India as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Later, the Soviet Union suggested that a sixth permanent UNSC seat could be decided upon, that could get filled by India. Again, the offer was turned down. Although more than 270, 000 Hindus were killed by mobs in East Pakistan throughout 1951, Nehru chose to keep silent, so as to avoid provoking the anger of the genocidal leadership of Pakistan.Despite such a legacy, history books almost glow in the dark with chapters on the genius of Nehru and his successor s successor, Indira Gandhi. Roads, bridges, schools, colleges, hospitals and multiple other structures and institutions are named after the family. It is therefore small wonder that there may be a sense of entitlement and privilege in some of the descendants of Motilal Nehru, who ensured (again through the Mahatma) that Jawaharlal took over as All India Congress Committee President. Neither Lal Bahadur Shastri or P.V. Narasimha Rao were blind followers of Nehruvian policies, and both paid for such effrontery by being sharply attacked, in the case of Shastri by Vijaylakshmi Pandit (sister of Nehru) publicly and by Indira Gandhi (who was then a minister in the Shastri Council of Ministers) privately. In Rao s case, senior Congress leaders were encouraged to split the Congress, and Sheila Dixit, Arjun Singh and Narain Dutt Tiwari led the rebels in attacking the Congress government of which till recently they were a part in merciless terms. The consequence was the rise of the BJP, which under Atal Behari Vajpayee was open in its respect for the Nehru legacy. Prime Minister Vajpayee adopted a policy of familial benevolence towards the Nehru family, and was much loved by their supporters as a consequence. It is only in 2014 that the shadow of the Nehru legacy began to move away from the centres of power, a shift that has become complete with the victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha campaign of Narendra Modi. The stunning victory of the PM has resulted in a tectonic shift in the polity of India that has been created by the societal change correctly discerned by PM Modi. The country can now be said to have moved fully from the Nehruvian era to the Modified era. Just as Nehru was given the freedom by an adoring public to fashion the policies of his choice, and to populate his government with people to his liking, PM Modi too has the freedom to change personnel and adopt the policies of his choice. Such is the support for Modi within the public that he has even more authority than Indira Gandhi did in her time. He has the same level of authority as Nehru in the 1950s. The people are looking for Modified India to move into double digit growth, to seize the geopolitical choices on offer and to ensure that all citizens and their institutions are treated the same, unlike when rules and laws, such as those involving freedom of movement and settlement throughout India are applied only to some. Sabka saath sabka vikas is the motto of PM Modi, and he will need to continue to work tirelessly in order to achieve this lofty goal.
The poll watchdog also said that Congress president Rahul Gandhi has asked for time till May 7 to file a reply to the show cause notice issued on May 1 for a speech at Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh on April 23. ”They snatch away your land, jungle and water hellip;and then, say that the tribal people can be shot at, ” Gandhi was quoted as saying in the speech.Modi, who has been cleared on three previous occasions for speeches made in election rallies, was facing two more complaints for an address in his home constituency of Varanasi on April 25 and for another speech in Maharashtra 's Nanded on April 6. Shah faced complaints for his speeches in West Bengal 's Krishnanagar on April 22 and in Maharashtra 's Nagpur on April 9.
