For anyone hoping that foreign operations are no longer using social media to try to meddle in and influence debate and policy in the US and all over the world, Thursday should be a wakeup call.
In the months before American voters went to the polls, some of these campaigns with foreign ties sought to stoke social and political unrest around hot button issues, the company said, echoing tactics that social media companies have spent two years trying to counter. The approach had been adopted by the Internet Research Agency, an organisation with ties to the Russian government, two years earlier in an attempt to steer the 2016 presidential election in favour of Donald Trump.Twitter said it removed 418 accounts believed to have originated in Russia prior to Election Day last November, but declined to specify exactly when and said it could not link the efforts definitively to the IRA.
President Donald Trump said Russia has been secretly developing ;a prohibited missile system that poses a direct threat to our allies and troops abroad.; He said the U.S. had adhered to the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces treaty since it was signed in 1987, but Russia has not. "We cannot be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other, " Trump said in a written statement.

The longest government shutdown in American history is over, but the damage it inflicted on the nation's space program may be felt for years to come. The 35 day partial shutdown, which caused most of NASA's workforce to be furloughed, ended last Friday (Jan. 25) with a temporary fix mdash; President Donald Trump signing a continuing resolution that funds the government through Feb. 15.
Washington today revealed it would quit the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) a day earlier than planned, once again raising the spectre of nuclear tipped missiles deployed on European soil. The withdrawal comes just days after it emerged the US has begun developing low yield, ”tactical ” nukes following concerns that its existing arsenal of warheads are too big to use. The 1987 INF was designed to avert nuclear war between the US and Soviet Union by banning the development, testing or deployment of certain types of short and intermediate range missiles.Washington and NATO say Russia has been flouting the treaty with its new Novator 9M729 missile but Moscow insists the weapon is not covered by those banned under the accord.

More than 30 years ago, when he was still a builder in Manhattan, Donald Trump said he had one great ambition: He wanted then U.S. President Ronald Reagan to appoint him America s envoy to Moscow to negotiate a nuclear arms deal. It ll take one hour of discussion before the Cold War is over, Trump was said to have boasted at the time.Plainly, the Trumpian grandiosity was always there, but what happened to the ambition? Now that he s president, Trump doesn t need to wait for an appointment to try his hand at nuclear negotiation. Only last year the president called nuclear weapons the biggest problem in the world. And yet Trump has barely mentioned the issue while his administration announced Friday it is pulling out of the three decade old Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and is possibly setting its sights on former President Barack Obama s 2011 New START treaty, the strategic arms reduction pact that will expire about two weeks into the next presidential term if it isn t extended. Negotiations on such an extension would need to begin soon.
