This phenomenon has proven to be vexing, not only from a biological perspective, but also from economic, social, political and geographical perspectives. Humanity s attempt to control the detrimental effects of this viral outbreak entail various strategies, including countrywide or regional lockdowns, calls for social distancing, mask wearing, and other public health measures. It is increasingly clear that different strategies entail different trade offs.Certainly, it seems as though all viable strategies imply some price that must be paid, whether in lives or livelihoods. The politically contentious concern of the spread of biological contagion is now accompanied by an anti racist movement sparked by the abhorrent killing of George Floyd. These events are more than just temporally concurrent.
Bengaluru (Karnataka) India , July 27 (ANI): Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that when COVID 19 has made life and livelihoods difficult, it is unfortunate that charges have been levelled of irregularities in the procurement of COVID 19 equipment."The Congress which has levelled charges against the ruling BJP has not so far filed a complaint against any investigating agency. Instead, the Congress has limited itself to getting publicity. On the other hand, the ruling BJP instead of coming clean by ordering a probe into the main charges is indirectly admitting the scam," Kumaraswamy said on Sunday."By washing dirty linen in public, both the Congress and the BJP are playing a cruel joke on people instead of protecting their lives," he said.Hitting out at the BJP, he asked, "Why is it that the BJP is not ordering an investigation into the Rs 2,000 crore Covid 19 corruption charges levelled against the government by the Congress? Why is the government keeping quiet on the corruption charges?"He said, "Is this the leadership provided by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa? There could be political pressure on seeking resignation of his Ministers. But why has no action been initiated against any officers? Is there any effort to destroy the evidence by retaining officers in their existing postings?" "Hunger for publicity is evident when we look at the press conference by five Ministers at a time," he said. The government has countered the charges of the Congress but backtracked on ordering an investigation, he said."Would this not give rise to suspicion that the government is involved in the scam?" he asked. He also asked why Congress leaders have not filed a complaint before any investigating agency despite "possessing documents to prove the charges"."Are the Congress leaders trying to get publicity or are they concerned about the welfare of the people? The Congress Legislative Party leader is seeking an account (Lekka Kodi) while the BJP president is seeking answers (Uttara Kodi). Is it enough to give such questions and answers?"Is there a concrete legal plan to deal with the irregularities? he asked."Looking at the way the Congress leaders have addressed media conferences and taken to social media campaigns, it appears that they are trying to get publicity," he said. The Seattle Children s Museum has laid off nine of its remaining full time staff members this week following a controversial move to delete anti racist messaging from its social media posts. In an open letter published Tuesday on Medium, anonymous workers detailed how executive director Christi Keith purposefully removed captions on Instagram and Facebook that centered the Black Lives Matter movement in order to avoid discouraging contributions from donors. The staff claims this issue is symbolic of regular indignities, microaggressions, and institutional inequities from director level staff. On May 30, an employee added posts addressing racial justice in early childhood education on the museum s social media accounts, stating that children should learn anti racism to foster loving and inclusive communities. In the hours after posting, Keith allegedly took over the social media accounts, first deleting the phrase Black Lives Matter from each caption and then deleting the captions altogether (original text can be viewed on Facebook s public edit history of the posts). In the process, she also changed the Instagram account password and revoked the staff member s access to their work email.

Eduardo Munoz Alvarez AP Link Copied Eliot Engel first won his seat in Congress in 1988, in a primary that helped end the old corrupt Bronx machine. Today, according to the official call by the Associated Press, he lost his June primary to newcomer Jamaal Bowman, in a race that became a national symbol of the rise of a new wave of progressives.A lot is happening in Engel and Bowman s sliver of the Bronx and Westchester and a lot is changing. The New York district was home to the state s first reported coronavirus case, in March, but it s also home to neighborhoods as different as Riverdale and Co Op City, a long standing Jewish community with a burgeoning population of color that has shown little interest in waiting for change. You know what Donald Trump is more afraid of than anything else? A Black man with power, Bowman said during his primary night speech. I asked him why when we spoke shortly after the primary. He told me Trump is a racist, and a fascist, and he has benefited from white supremacy his entire life. And when you carry that ideology white supremacy not just as skin color, but as mindset, as ideology when you benefit from that, you can t tolerate a Black man or a person of color with power who is not afraid to speak up for themselves, to speak truth to power, to engage in the community in the way that might be undermining to you.
