Meet The Data Sitters Club, a group of scholars who ve come together to do computational text analysis of the enormously popular children s book series they grew up reading: Ann M. Martin s The Baby Sitters Club, published in the 1980s and 1990s about a group of middle school girls in a fictional suburban Connecticut town who formed a successful babysitting business.Quinn Dombrowski is the Kristy Thomas of the group Kristy, for those not already in the know, being the character who conceived the Baby Sitters Club, or BSC, and served as the club s president. Dombrowski, an academic technology specialist at Stanford University s Division of Literatures, Cultures and Languages, identifies as a Kristy, short in stature and long in leadership ability, except she lacks Kristy s athletic skills. Somewhat paradoxically, I m the world s least athletic Kristy, she said. I am short, and I take charge, but I only run if chased and I m terrified of spheres of all sorts. (She would not have distinguished herself as a player on Kristy s Krushers, the children s softball team Kristy coached. Or maybe she would have fit right in, given the Krushers' less than formidable athletic reputation.)
That is what England s outgoing Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, thinks, too. In her October 2019 special report on childhood obesity, her final advice to government on health issues, she doubted that the 2030 target could be reached without some really serious measures being introduced. So, in Time To Solve Childhood Obesity, she lists the bold measures she thinks need to be taken the same draconian and game changing measures that Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt promised but never delivered before they lost their jobs. The pity is that Davies will no longer be in the post to oversee her solutions take shape. There is not the space in this column to go through all 49 of them, but one should be looked at in detail. There s some history to go through and it s shaming. In advocating the routine measurement of children s weight and height, Dame Sally has attempted to right the wrongs wrought on a generation of children. The wrongs began in 2002 when Whitehall failed to implement a similar proposal made by her predecessor, Sir Liam Donaldson. At a stroke, the government condemned millions of schoolchildren to grow into obesity without the professional checks on their health to which they should be entitled. It is sadly ironic that animals are measured yearly during health checks in zoos and annual MOTs ensure that our cars are in good working order, but with children the nation s future no such checks have been deemed relevant until now.
Theresa Caputo is the star of the reality television series ;Long Island Medium.; She is a lady with special gifts and the ability to talk to the spirits of people who have passed from this life to the next one. She;s lived the life of an ordinary Long Island housewife but she cannot deny the pleas of those from the astral plane to pass on messages to their loved ones. If you enjoy watching ;Long Island Medium,; then here are 5 other shows you would probably also enjoy. "Monica the Medium " is a reality show that is similar to "Long Island Medium, " with the exception that Monica is a college student who is trying to finish her studies. The series follows the life of Monica who uses her ability to talk to dead people to help those that are still in the world of the living. She was born with the ability to communicate with people who are in the spirit realm, but she had trouble accepting this ability as a gift until she was in college. It was initially a struggle for her but she came to the realization that it was a blessing that she could use to help improve the lives of others. The series launched in 2015 and it is based on a platform of the stories of the people who sought out Monica ''s help to communicate with their loved ones who had gone on before them. The depictions are not only engaging, but they are also emotional for those who are believers in an afterlife. The majority of cases bring about healing for those who are still alive and it ''s a very touching show that appeals to anyone who believes in the paranormal or those who are at least curious about the possibility.
AT 59 PAGES, the manifesto published by the Conservatives on November 24th is about half the length of the not so little red book launched by Labour a few days earlier. Its brevity is matched by the modesty of its proposals, which take a back seat to the overriding promise to get Brexit done a phrase that appears in the document more than 20 times. The manifesto proposes a small increase in spending on public services, particularly health (with more nurses and more doctors appointments) and law and order (with more police). Workers would get a tax break in the form of a slightly higher threshold for national insurance contributions, a payroll tax. The cancellation of a planned cut to corporation tax would help to pay for this. If a single Budget had contained all of these tax and spending proposals we would have been calling it modest, said Paul Johnson, head of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a think tank. As a blueprint for five years in government the lack of significant policy action is remarkable.

The model suggests that watery planets with dense atmospheres, continents, and long days mdash; slowly rotating planets that is mdash; were most conducive to life. These conditions stimulate ocean circulation, which brings nutrients from the depths to the surface where it 's available for biologic activity. ” The research shows us that conditions on some exoplanets with favorable ocean circulation patterns could be better suited to support life that is more abundant or more active than life on Earth, ” Stephanie Olson, a University of Chicago researcher who lead the new study, said in a press release.
Macron, who has said previously he is happy to be the "bad guy" on Brexit, roundly rejected Johnson's calls to scrap a key plank of a deal negotiated between the EU and former British premier Theresa May."Renegotiation on the terms currently proposed by the British is not an option that exists, and that has always been made clear by (EU) President Tusk," Macron told reporters on Wednesday evening. At stake is the so called "backstop", an arrangement guaranteeing that border checks will not return between EU member Ireland and Northern Ireland which is part of Britain.
Original air date: March 14 at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET, 0200 UTC) Since the discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a sun-like star in 1995, several thousand more have been discovered. We’ve peered into the atmospheres of some, and we’ve found whole families of planets orbiting strange stars -- many in configurations starkly different from our own. We’ve learned a lot from NASA's Kepler mission, which launched 10 years ago and ceased operations in November 2018. A new NASA planet-hunting spacecraft called TESS, which began science operations as Kepler was winding down, will give us thousands of new discoveries in the coming years. And the Spitzer Space Telescope has provided us valuable insights into what these worlds might be like. This show will look at the state of exoplanet science and give us a view of what future discoveries may be around the corner. Speakers: Jessie Christiansen, Research Scientist at the Caltech/IPAC NASA Exoplanet Science Institute, Caltech Karl Stapelfeldt, Chief Scientist, NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program Office, JPL
When scientists go looking for life on distant exoplanets, they generally focus on rocky worlds the size of Earth. But most of these so called super Earths orbit, not yellow dwarfs like our sun, but red dwarfs which are less than 60% the sun s size. Now, astronomers report that such exoplanets might not be the best places for harboring life for one key reason: They seem to lack habitable atmospheres.Red dwarfs are by far the most common stars in the Milky Way, but their planets may have a hard time holding onto an atmosphere, in part because these somewhat erratic stars subject them to powerful blasts of radiation.
The U.K.;s new prime minister, Boris Johnson, has pledged to take the country out of the bloc ;come what may; by the current deadline of October 31. He has refused to rule out a no deal Brexit unless E.U. leaders allow him to overhaul the agreement they had negotiated with his predecessor Theresa May ndash; something the E.U. says is impossible. The leaked document, obtained by British broadcaster Sky News, was prepared before Johnson took office and paints a chaotic picture of life in the U.K. in the weeks following a no deal Brexit.
This includes just 50 percent of Conservative voters according to the survey. Mr Johnson became Prime Minister on Wednesday replacing Theresa May. He has vowed to take Britain out of the EU on October 31, even if no formal exit deal can be agreed.
The U.K. leader has no meetings scheduled with EU officials. Instead, he was in central England on Friday, talking about his promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers. In the coming days he ll speak on other aspects of a packed domestic agenda that looks suspiciously like an election platform.Britain s next scheduled election is three years away, but signs suggest Johnson may be preparing for a snap poll within weeks or months to break the Brexit impasse that defeated his predecessor, Theresa May. She resigned after failing, three times, to get Parliament s backing for her divorce deal with the EU.
The United Kingdom's new Prime Minister Boris Johnson's first move was a cull of more than half of his predecessor's Theresa May's cabinet.
Priti Patel, who is famous for her criticism against former PM Theresa May #8216;s Brexit, took charge as Britain;s first Indian origin home secretary. "I will do everything in my power to keep our country safe, our people secure, and also to fight the scourge of crime that we see on our streets. I look forward to the challenges that now lie ahead, " Patel said.
But instead of repenting or perishing, DelRay and Colle decided to start kissing in front of the protestors, going so far as to rip off their shirts, hop on one another and basically start humping in the middle of the boardwalk. One protestor looked away, but the one on the megaphone just got louder and louder, presumably to distract others from the two guys getting to first base together. In a tweet, Colle wrote, I asked these Anti Gay preachers how to be forgiven for our sins. Theres no helping you guys, he says Well. Might as well enjoy it then
The UK will have a new Prime Minister very soon, with the Tory leadership race about to draw to a close. After Theresa May s resignation, the leadership candidates have been narrowed down to two Jeremy Hunt and the favourite Boris Johnson.
