It followed the release of an open letter to the Academy and the producers of the Oscars broadcast, signed by hundreds of members including directors, actors, cinematographers and editors, urging them to reverse the decision.

The cameraman started working with Fassbinder in 1970. Together, they made over a dozen films within just a few years.
