”These things always blow over, ” McConnell told reporters during a cheerful press conference after the Senate voted to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court on Saturday afternoon.Kavanaugh, who three women accused of sexual misconduct, was confirmed to the Supreme Court with 50 votes in favor and 48 opposed after several weeks of rancorous, partisan debate, conflicting testimonies and an FBI investigation that divided the country. McConnell began his remarks by saying that the decision to confirm Kavanaugh was a proud moment.
One year on from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg taking to the stage to tell fellow nerds that he wants one billion people to try virtual reality, the Behoodied One returned this year, and admitted that it has not even hit one per cent of that figure.Nevertheless, he told Oculus Connect attendees this week "I'm confident we'll get there," and this year the reason to be cheerful is the new Oculus Quest: an updated version of its high end Rift. Crucially, however, it comes without the big clunky cable sticking out the back of it that needs to be attached to a high powered computer.

facebook twitter google tumblr What is punk? It s a deceptively complex question derived from existential importance at least to anyone who was ever 16 years old and it is a driving factor of John Cameron Mitchell s How to Talk to Girls at Parties, a cheerfully bizarre little piece of spikey haired weirdness. As based on genre dreamweaver Neil Gaiman s short story of the same name, here is a patchy, scrappy, and all around messy piece of sci fi psychedelics with a kernel of romantic joy underneath what amounts to screaming Klaatu, Varada, Nikto into a microphone. Or in other words, it s pretty damn punk in its own right.
That was the cheerful gist of a speech the Wrinkle In Time director gave during an acceptance speech at the Gloria Awards earlier this week, recounting a story in which an unnamed male friend (and fellow member of the Directors Guild Of America) called her up to warn her that there had been some complaints about Queen Sugar s hiring policies, suggesting they were discriminatory. Per Vanity Fair, DuVernay s response was unequivocal: Thank you, friend, thank you for that call. I invite you to tell whoever is feeling discriminated against to sue me so that I can sue every studio that has left women out cause we can do this, if that s what you want to do. Queen Sugar isn t the only show on TV to exclusively hire women to direct; the second season of Jessica Jones did something similar earlier this year. In her speech at the ceremony where she was receiving a Woman Of Vision Award DuVernay stressed the importance of carving out these kind of spaces for women in previously male dominated fields, noting that not just the director s chair, but all of the major behind the scenes roles on the series, are handled by women. Why did we do this? she asked. Because we can. Because we can create spaces that nourish in our own image, in the same way that our male counterparts have created in their own image for over a century.
Both events highlight the extent to which a meticulous control of information and intolerance of dissent are used to maintain China 's political image. At a news conference on the sidelines of a legislative meeting yesterday (March 13), Chinese journalist Liang Xiangyi, a reporter for domestic TV network China Business News, was caught on camera doing a dramatic eye roll as journalist Zhang Huijun asked a softball question next to her. Zhang, who introduced herself as the operating director of a US based broadcaster, cheerfully asked an official a question relating to China 's ”One Belt, One Road ” infrastructure plan. Rather than directly asking a question, Zhang used most of her 44 seconds (video) to summarize China 's achievements in the area.

Hello from Guangzhou, China, where the sunny skies have turned overcast, but global business and political leaders remain cheerfully optimistic about China s future.Everything is big here, including the companies presenting. I already mentioned that our opening day began with fireside chats with the CEOs of three of the biggest companies operating in China: Alibaba, Apple, and Tencent. (I wish Jeff Bezos, whose business has struggled in China, had been here; then we could have coined a new label: Triple A plus T.)
The US paper of record triggered another wave of internet outrage today (and at least one great satire) when it published a cheerful profile of Tony Hovater, a self described white nationalist ” who argues that Adolf Hitler was a guy who really believed he was fighting for his people and doing what he thought was right. ”The article describes Hovater, a 29 year old welder from Ohio, as the Nazi sympathizer next door, polite and low key at a time the old boundaries of accepted political activity can seem alarmingly in flux. ” It is clearly meant to be a glimpse behind the curtain, a snapshot of an openly racist man whose views have edged closer to the mainstream in an era where white supremacists march triumphantly and the commander in chief defends them as including some very fine people. ”
You ve probably been seeing rather a lot of David Gandy lately. Reasons to be cheerful. Last week he appeared on ITV s This Morning and the Lorraine Show last week, giving styles tips and looking dapper as ever. David chatted candidly about his career, being the first male supermodel, and also talking about his new role as Marks and Spencer's tailoring ambassador.
With a title like Ragnarok you might think that the latest Thor movie was finally getting to the good stuff. No more faffing about with elves and Stone Henge, no more wacky stranger in a strange land shenanigans about Thor not knowing how pet stores work. This is RAGNAROK, the fabled end of the Asgardian world. Surely now is the time to take it seriously. But of course, now is not that time. Thor: Ragnarok is another sugary confection from Marvel Studios, a production company that produces cheerful diversions and only occasionally sells a serious dramatic plot point. That s hardly a problem most of the time. The world is a tense and uncomfortable place filled with things we d rather not think about, and watching a raccoon kill people to the tune of a 1970s pop jam is certainly a fun way to escape our shared daily drudgery.
Originally a 1928 stage show featuring the songs of George and Ira Gershwin and starring a young Astaire, "Funny Face " was reborn in 1957 with a different story, new songs, and additional music by Leonard Gershe and Roger Edens. The charming film somehow successfully teamed the 58 year old Astaire, playing a fashion photographer who also dances, with the 28 year old Hepburn as the owner of a bookstore who is accidentally discovered by Astaire and groomed to become a fashion model. "Funny Face " also features the famous vocal coach Kay Thompson in an important supporting role as Astaire 's publisher and editor.Released in 1957 in conjunction with the movie, the original soundtrack, produced by Verve founder Norman Granz, featuredthe songs rearranged and edited down so both sides of the LP would be of approximate length. Taken as a whole, with the songs restored to their full length and in the proper order, one gets to hear the full musical story for the first time. Among the highlights are Hepburn 's character Jo Stockton on a wistful version of the Gershwin 's "How Long Has This Been Going On, " Astaire singing about his co star in a swinging rendition of "Funny Face " (and the equally rewarding alternate version), the wild dance number "Basal Metabolism, " the cheerful "On How To Be Lovely, " and Astaire 's typically charming and warm vocalizing on "He Loves And She Loves. "
According to a few condolence messages that have been doing the rounds on social media, the 30 year old Bidisha was a multi talented person and a cheerful girl during her college days. She participated in cultural events and didn't back off from being a part of various social activities. She was an inspiration to her juniors and was a jovial girl. Hailing from Guwahati in Assam, Bidisha completed her schooling from Nichols School in 2007. It is easy to plonk your kids down in front of a screen and stick on a cheerful Disney rendition of "Let It Go," however, among the snowmen and cute little stone people, there is a dark world of Elsa and watersports and I don't mean jet skiing. Parents are being urged to watch what their kids are seeing online, highlighting a trend of cartoons featuring your favorite characters in rather "mature" circumstances. The worst offenders are various stop motion videos featuring playful Play Doh versions of #Frozen's Elsa and Spider Man, or a well drawn parody cartoon featuring a zombie #PeppaPig. Everyone loves seeing a childhood classic reimagined for an adult audience, but even I draw the line at "porkture porn."
Travelers are already bemoaning the new security related restrictions, which came without warning on Monday. But Royal Jordanian Airlines, one of the nine airlines operating out of 10 airports impacted by the U.S. ban, is taking a more cheerful spin. They want flyers to know there s still a silver lining in the clouds, via some snarky posts on their Facebook page:
