Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced an interim assistance of Rs 1,500 crore for West Bengal and Odisha after reviewing the situation caused by cyclone 'Amphan' that claimed 80 lives, lay waste to standing crops in thousands of hectares, and ruined infrastructure. Two days after the worst cyclone in years devastated the two states, Modi reviewed the situation with chief ministers Mamata Banerjee and Naveen Patnaik. Modi announced an interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for West Bengal, already battling a surge in COVID 19 cases and deaths, besides an influx of migrant labourers, after a review meeting with Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Banerjee, and the state''s top officials.

I would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come and visit Cyclone Amphan affected areas," Ms Banerjee said after a review meeting this morning.

But the scientists were well aware of a similar gas leak that hit the Satellite Launch Vehicle 3 (SLV 3), India s first experimental satellite launch vehicle in 1979.The elementary computer then had raised an alarm. But Isro officials then decided to override the alert and paid the price. The gas leak, worsened by a faulty valve caused the vehicle to crash into the Bay of Bengal, 317 seconds after launch on August 10, 1979.
The incident, a suspected case of honour killing, occurred on Friday in Mahendratola village, they said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has improved its seat tally of 282 in 2014 to 303 (wins and leads as of 10pm) in 2019. The BJP has maintained its near dominance in the northern and western regions of the country. It has won all Lok Sabha seats in of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh it has won 28 out of 29 seats. It has recovered from its big assembly election defeat in Chattisgarh. In Maharashtra, the BJP and its ally Shiv Sena has repeated their 2014 performance, winning 41 out of 48 seats. To be sure, it has suffered marginal losses in some states. The biggest of them is Uttar Pradesh, where the party 's tally has come down from 71 to 62 between 2014 and 2019. The BJP has lost two seats in Andhra Pradesh, and a seat each in Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh. In some states such as Bihar and Jharkhand, the BJP contested fewer seats than it had in 2014 to accommodate its alliance partners. The NDA 's overall tally is either the same or higher in these states. The severe cyclonic storm Fani which hit coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Friday has weakened and passed over Kolkata and gangetic West Bengal without causing much of havoc.
Categorised at grade 5 hurricane, the cyclone Fani is reportedly carrying winds with up to 200 kmph of speed. According to India Meteorological Department forecast, the Fani cyclone was supposed to make landfall within 12 to 24 hours, later weaken swiftly and dissipate over northeastern part of India and Bangladesh.
