Unlike classical Western medicine, it helps the practitioner achieve optimal wellness through balance and integration and works to treat the root cause of illness rather than the symptoms.
Winters are here and instances of cold, cough and flu are on a steady rise. Indian households, particularly in North, often start preparing for winters much in advance. Summer veggies and fruits give way for winter vegetables and greens. Warming winter spices like cardamom and cinnamon also find their place in a range of our curries and concoctions. Most of our winter favourite ingredients are helpful in giving our immunities a boost. Ayurveda has a handful of remedies, which can help prevent you from winter related infections, using only a few common kitchen ingredients.1. Ginger remedy: India's love affair with ginger needs no introduction. Apart from adding their distinct flavour to our curries, they are also replete with medicinal and healing properties. Its active component gingerol has sedative, antibacterial and analgesic properties that help combat cold and flu. According to 'The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies' by Dr. Vasant Lad, a ginger cardamom tea is an effective way to prevent infection. Mix two parts of ginger with three parts of cinnamon and a pinch of cardamom. Steep a teaspoon of the mixture in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes. When the tea cools, add half a teaspoon of honey to taste. Drink the tea twice a day for relief. Dr. Vasant Lad in the book also suggests taking steam for quick relief. "Boil 1 teaspoon of ginger, or a few eucalyptus leaves, in a pint of water. Turn off the stove, put a towel over your head, and inhale the steam. This will relieve congestion and help you feel much better."

By the year 2030, Diabetes is set to become the seventh largest killer across the globe, says the WHO. Diabetes is a condition marked by fluctuations in blood sugar levels. There are many different types of Diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, gestational diabetes, and prediabetes. Lack of awareness and misdiagnosis can make diabetes management even tougher. Diabetics are often advised to take extra care about their diet. If their blood sugar levels are consistently high, they are even prescribed a special diabetes diet. Sugary goods, high carb foods and trans fats are not advised to be included in a diabetes diet plan. They should add more fibre rich foods to their diets. There are many herbal concoctions that could help manage blood sugar levels naturally too. One such concoction is that of fenugreek water. According to Ayurvedic experts, diabetics should definitely have a stock of methi dana (fenugreek seeds) in their homes. You can consume methi dana sprouts or drink fenugreek water the first thing in morning. The fenugreek benefits are aplenty.A study published in the International Journal For Vitamin and Nutrition Research, found that a daily dose of 10 grams of fenugreek seeds soaked in hot water may help control type 2 diabetes. Methi dana water has the ability to lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. It contains fibre and helps in slowing down digestion process, further regulating the absorption of carbohydrates and sugar. The fenugreek water also helps in improving the way your body uses sugar.
