Netflix and Gaming Stocks Gain, Many Hollywood Majors Fall Amid Pandemic

Big media and entertainment stocks rebounded in the second quarter ndash; along with the broader market as investors overall seemed to shrug off concerns about the novel coronavirus pandemic and the recession it has been expected to cause ndash; but remain in negative territory for the year. Sector investors had already been concerned about cord cutting, the continued rise of streaming giants like Netflix and new services, such as TikTok, grabbing younger audiences #39; attention.

Then the pandemic hit in March, dragging down Hollywood stocks amid shuttered cinemas, the end of live sports, interrupted film and TV productions and worries about the fallout from the recession caused by the virus.

And given the lack of past experience with a global pandemic #39;s effect on Hollywood stocks, Wall Street has continued to debate how long and lasting an impact it will have on the sector.

A $0-budget film topping the box office? 'Unsubscribe’ joins a fine tradition of Hollywood hoaxes

During the lockdown, there s been pressure to be productive. What did you achieve? Did you become fluent in Mandarin? Learn to bake something that doesn t harrowingly resemble the Pillsbury Doughboy s afterbirth? Developed a newfound interest in staring at the wall and contemplating the futility of existence? (Hey, it beats watching Netflix s The Floor Is Lava).

Trumping all of our accomplishments with the certainty of Indiana Jones smugly rocking up to the Antiques Roadshow with the Ark of the Covenant however, are YouTuber Eric Tabach and director Christian Nilsson who topped the box office with a $0 budget movie.

Nilsson wrote the script for Unsubscribe in a day, before shooting the 29 minute film over Zoom, roping in a cast of friends, including Ozark s Charlie Tahan.

The pair then exploited a loophole in ticket sales known as four walling , essentially the self publishing of the film world, where distributors rent out a theatre and buy the seats, retaining any ticket sales.

Despite only two people watching it, it succeeded in becoming the Number One film in the US for one day in June.

How does Netflix detect and block VPN use?

(Image credit: Netflix) Because not all Netflix shows are available worldwide, many of its subscribers turn to VPNs that disguise their location and fool the streaming service into offering them a content catalog for a different region. However, if you 've tried to do this before, you might have found that Netflix was able to detect and block your VPN connection.

But how is it able to do that? In short, the streaming service uses various tools to identify VPN connections including databases of known VPN IP addresses.

7 Bollywood titles to hit Disney+ Hotstar 7 new titles to hit Disney+ Hotstar

Disney Hotstar, the video streaming service owned by Walt Disney, has announced the acquisition and release of seven Bollywood titles featuring stars such as Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt, directly on the streaming platform, in what is estimated to be a 400 crore deal. The move comes close on the heels of high profile films such as Gulabo Sitabo and Gunjan Saxena The Kargil Girl going directly to streaming platforms like Amazon and Netflix, respectively.

The Disney Hotstar deal busts the myth that only mid sized films are skipping theatrical releases as the covid 19 pandemic rages on and theatres remain shut.

At least three of the titles that the service has notched up are big ticket films, including Akshay Kumar s Laxmmi Bomb, Ajay Devgn s Bhuj: The Pride of India, and Alia Bhatt starrer Sadak 2, with budgets of at least the first two at over 100 crore, experts said.
